Book Review: RISEN by Cole Gibsen

I've had a soft spot for vampires since I discovered what they were. I sat enthralled in front of Buffy the Vampire Slayer while my phone remained unanswered every week. I gladly handed over countless hours and space in my mind to the Vampire Diaries, Sookie Stackhouse, and Twilight series. I couldn't be any more excited that there is a fresh take on vampires with tons of magic and kickass, smart female characters.

RISEN by Cole Gibsen breathes new life into one of my favorite monsters and kicks off a promising new series. Charlie's secluded and boring life gets turned upside down the moment mysterious monsters arrive at her cabin and kidnap her aunt, thrusting her into a dangerous and magical world full of questions and adventure. RISEN snagged my attention instantly and didn’t let go until the end, actually not even then because I am counting down the days until I get to read the second one.

Things I really loved:

- Charlie

She is a brave and smart protagonist. I enjoyed watching her rise up as impossible situations, and scary forks-in-the-road were thrown her away. I am really looking forward to seeing what’s in store next for her.

- The Vampires

I am not going to go too much into detail here because I feel like you should experience it as I did, but the vampires here are fantastic, complex, and DIFFERENT! Reading about them all was so much fun!

-Story Pace

The action starts right away and doesn’t slow down, but I never felt rushed. Cole does a masterful job of naturally weaving quiet moments between the chaos to deepen character relationships, letting us get comfortable for just a second before the next obstacle appears.

RISEN is a fantastically fun and compelling vampire story with so much heart. It’s out on shelves today! (Happy Book Birthday Cole!) I talked with Cole a couple weeks back on Too Many Words all about RISEN and her journey creating it. It was a blast talking to her. I kept sitting down to write this essay I promised for a collection. The theme of the piece needs to boil down to one thing: my relationship with my body and mind. Easy, right? *chokes* When I took th
